Who's more important to Apple: Steve Jobs or Jonathan Ive?

Since the introduction of the iPod in 2001, Apple has gone from strength to strength.

Going back a little further, since the reintroduction of Steve Jobs in 1997, Apple has gone from strength to strength.

Without in any way undermining the influence of Steve Jobs, I have also begun to wonder how strong Apple would be without Jonathan Ive.

For those of you who don't know, Jonathan Ive is the English born Senior Vice President of Design at Apple. And all the latest creations from Apple (the iPod's, new Macbooks and iMacs, the iPhone, and the new iPad) are designed by Jonathan Ive.

Clearly Steve Jobs has created the environment where Jonathan Ive is able to thrive, but what would Apple be like today without Jonathan Ive? Just how valuable is he to Apple?

Does the name iTunes need changing?

I was thinking about this question the other day. It used to be the case that iTunes sold music, as in tunes. That was all that it sold.

But that has now changed. It sells movies, TV shows, iPhone apps, and - soon - eBooks. In other words it's no longer a store for tunes. It's a store for media.

I'm not sure that I see 'iMedia' taking off though.

Increasingly though iTunes is the hub for all things Apple. Does it having a name so specifically orientated towards music create any issues as it becomes this ever-increasing hub for all kinds of media.

And if not iTunes, then what? What would you call iTunes?!

All my blogs in one place!

I'm very aware that having three blogs, Facebook, and a Twitter account it quite a lot for people to keep up with.

Leaving aside Facebook and Twitter for now though, there's a good reason for having three separate blogs.
  • www.samradford.com - is my 'Awaken' blog focussed on publishing 'non-conventional wisdom for work, life, and play'.
  • www.samradford.org - is my 'The Future Now' blog focussed on publishing 'non-religious thoughts on life, faith, and spirituality'
  • www.samradford.net - is my personal blog where I post life and family stuff as well as commenting on technology, sport and anything else that interests me.
As should be apparent, each blog has a very different focus. And I'm very aware that for many readers, you are only interested in one or two of these blogs and not them all. Having said that though, I know that some of you would like an easier way to stay up-to-date with all three blogs without having to visit all three blogs. Well now you can!

If you would like to get email updates when I update any of my blogs you can simply sign up here. If I have posted anything to any of my blogs you'll simply get one email with the posts all together.

If you use a RSS reader like Google Reader, then you just need to subscribe to this feed that pulls in all three of my blogs into one feed.

Hope that helps!

Very excited about tomorrow!

I know, I know. I can't deny it, I'm a big fan of Apple products. And that's why I'm excited to see what new product they're going to unveil tomorrow.

Well, pretty much everyone knows what it'll be (a touch screen tablet computer) but I want to see just how good it is. I have high expectations.

I wonder too if there'll be any other surprise announcements.

It has to be said it's pretty exciting what Apple and Google are producing right now. Makes you wonder what Microsoft think of it all.

MailChimp...anyone else using this?

I've been trying out MailChimp for our email subscriptions to Vox Sheffield. I'm liking it so far. And liking in particular that - at this stage - it doesn't cost us anything!

Is anyone else using this? How have you found it?

I love this...get ready for a chuckle!

The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent terrorist threats and have raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved." Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross." The English have not been "A Bit Cross" since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies all but ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from "Tiresome" to a "Bloody Nuisance." The last time the British issued a "Bloody Nuisance" warning level was in 1588 when threatened by the Spanish Armada.

The Scots raised their threat level from "Pissed Off" to "Let's get the Bastards" They don't have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years.

The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from "Run" to "Hide". The only two higher levels in France are "Collaborate" and "Surrender." The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France 's white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the country's military capability. It's not only the French who are on a heightened level of alert. Italy has increased the alert level from "Shout loudly and excitedly" to "Elaborate Military Posturing." Two more levels remain: "Ineffective Combat Operations" and "Change Sides."

The Germans also increased their alert state from "Disdainful Arrogance" to "Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs." They also have two higher levels: "Invade a Neighbor" and "Lose".

Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual, and the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels .

The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy. Americans meanwhile and as usual are carrying out pre-emptive strikes, on all of their allies, just in case.

And in the southern hemisphere...

New Zealand has also raised its security levels - from "baaa" to "BAAAA!". Due to continuing defense cutbacks (the airforce being a squadron of spotty teenagers flying paper aeroplanes and the navy some toy boats in the Prime Minister's bath), New Zealand only has one more level of escalation, which is "I hope Australia will come and rescue us".

Australia, meanwhile, has raised its security level from "No worries" to "She'll be right, mate". Three more escalation levels remain: "Crikey!', "I think we'll need to cancel the barbie this weekend" and "The barbie is cancelled".. So far no situation has ever warranted use of the final escalation level.
